Fort Collins Officer Charged With Attempted Exploitation of a Child
Fort Collins Police Services has criminally charged police officer Andrew James Cirone after an internal investigation uncovered allegations that he sought explicit images from a woman depicting her when she was a juvenile.
The investigation began October 17, 2025, when a woman reported that Cirone had made inappropriate requests to her adult daughter for explicit images from when she was a juvenile. When FCPS launched the internal review, Cirone was reassigned and removed from public-facing duties. On December 30, 2025, he was placed on paid administrative leave as detectives continued their investigation.
The internal review revealed criminal components. Detectives found Cirone repeatedly violated standard investigative procedures outlined in FCPS policy and state law. Based on evidence gathered, Cirone turned himself in to the Larimer County Jail and was booked on February 4, 2025, facing one count of felony attempted sexual exploitation of a child and one count of misdemeanor first-degree official misconduct.
Police Chief Jeff Swoboda emphasized the department's commitment to accountability. "As public servants, there are clear expectations for police conduct," Swoboda said. "Accountability is essential to maintaining public trust, and we will continue to cooperate fully with all appropriate reviews to ensure our actions reflect the standards our community expects and deserves."
The Citizen Review Board will examine the case, as required by city and agency policy. Cirone, assigned to the downtown District 1 unit, has worked for FCPS since 2018.
Charges are an accusation by law enforcement; the suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
Detectives are concerned there may be additional victims or witnesses connected to this case. Anyone with information or who believes they are a victim should contact the FCPS Tipline at (970) 416-2125 or Larimer County Crime Stoppers at (970) 221-6868.
