Fort Collins has shut down ice rink operations at the Edora Pool Ice Center through Jan. 30 after a Zamboni backed into a partially open overhead door shortly after noon on Jan. 27, fatally injuring the city employee driving it.

The abrupt closure at one of Fort Collins' busiest recreation hubs spotlights safety practices, equipment use and training for ice-resurfacing operations citywide.

The driver was transported to an area hospital by emergency services and later died, according to the city. No other staff or EPIC visitors were injured. Out of respect for the ongoing investigation and those affected, the city has not released the employee's name.

"This is a tragic incident, and we are devastated at the loss of our colleague," City Manager Kelly DiMartino said. "Our hearts go out to everyone affected and we are working to support their loved ones and coworkers."

EPIC draws more than 1 million visits annually and hosts Colorado State University hockey, public skating and community programs.

The city acquired an electric Resurfice Olympia IceBear ice resurfacer in 2019 for about $140,000. It replaced an older propane machine that had consumed more than 26,000 gallons of fuel and cost more than $85,000 in maintenance.

"We remain committed to the safety and security of City staff and every member of our community," DiMartino said. "This pause in our ice rink operations is out of an abundance of caution, to allow for staff support, and to provide time and space to understand the circumstances surrounding the event."
