Fort Collins Police Investigate Fatal Shooting on West Fairway Lane
Fort Collins Police are investigating a fatal shooting that left one person dead and another hospitalized after an incident in the 100 block of West Fairway Lane early September 30.
Police received reports of the shooting at approximately 2:22 a.m. and found one person deceased at the scene. A second individual was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Detectives with the Fort Collins Police Services Crimes Against Persons Unit are leading the investigation and have determined that all involved individuals knew each other. Police stated there is no indication of any ongoing threat to the public.
"This is a tragic situation, and our deepest condolences go to the families and friends of those affected," said Assistant Chief Frank Barrett, who oversees the Crimes Against Persons Unit within the Criminal Investigations Division.
Investigation Continues
The shooting represents a serious case for the specialized unit, which typically handles violent crimes including homicides and assaults as part of the broader Criminal Investigations Division. CAPU detectives conduct thorough investigations into crimes against persons, working to gather evidence and determine circumstances surrounding incidents.
The Larimer County Coroner's Office will determine and release the official cause of death, manner of death, and identity of the deceased individual at a later date pending next of kin notifications. Under Colorado law, the Coroner's Office investigates deaths that are sudden, unexpected, violent, or suspicious, according to Colorado Revised Statutes.
The coroner's investigation process involves examining the scene of death, collecting evidence, photographing the scene, and interviewing witnesses and family members. An autopsy may be ordered to determine the cause and manner of death, with certain autopsies mandated by statute if the death is not natural or the cause is unknown.
The timeline for releasing information about the victim's identity and cause of death can vary based on the complexity of the case and the need for additional forensic analysis, such as toxicology reports. The Coroner's Office will notify next of kin as soon as possible after identification is confirmed before releasing information to the public.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case who has not already spoken to investigators to contact Detective Cole Giandomenico at 970-221-6558. As the investigation remains active, no additional information will be released at this time.
The incident adds to recent law enforcement activity across Northern Colorado, where police departments have been handling various emergency situations requiring coordination between multiple agencies and specialized units.
