The Lyric Cinema to Screen "V for Vendetta" on Guy Fawkes Night, November 5
The Lyric Cinema will present a one-night screening of "V for Vendetta" on November 5, marking Guy Fawkes Night with the dystopian thriller that draws directly from the historical commemoration.
The 2005 film stars Hugo Weaving as V, a masked vigilante fighting against a fascist government controlling London after a world war, and Natalie Portman as Evey, a young woman who becomes his ally after he rescues her from secret police. The screening coincides with the annual commemoration of the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and a group of English Catholics attempted to assassinate King James I by attacking the House of Lords.
Independent and specialty cinemas traditionally screen "V for Vendetta" on November 5 because the film's narrative and symbolism are built around Guy Fawkes Night. The main character wears a Guy Fawkes mask and frames his rebellion as a continuation of the spirit behind the phrase "Remember, remember the Fifth of November," which commemorates the historical event.
The Lyric has operated as Fort Collins' independent movie theater since owner Ben Mozer founded it in 2007. After relocating to its current facility at the north end of College Avenue in 2017, the theater has prioritized smaller budget films, independent productions, and foreign films not typically shown at larger corporate theaters, according to theater documentation.
The venue features three indoor theaters, one outdoor theater, a full bar, and a restaurant, along with programming that includes live music, improv performances, comedy acts, and art exhibitions. The theater functions as a multi-use arts venue serving Northern Colorado's alternative arts community.
Tickets for the November 5 screening are available online at the theater's website or at the concessions counter. The Lyric Cinema is located at 1209 North College Avenue in Fort Collins.
