Asphalt Repairs to Close Lanes at Taft Hill and Harmony Intersection
Northbound lanes of Taft Hill Road at Harmony Road will undergo asphalt patching repairs October 13 through October 14, with phased lane shifts restricting through and turning movements during construction hours.
The two-day project is part of the City of Fort Collins Essential Street Operations program and will maintain access to all residences and businesses, though drivers should expect changing traffic patterns at the intersection.
Work crews will operate Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with possible work outside those hours. The city recommends drivers use alternate routes to avoid delays in the construction zone.
Construction Impact Details
A phased lane shift will affect traffic flow on Taft Hill Road at the Harmony Road intersection during the repair work. The construction pattern will restrict both through traffic and turning movements as crews complete the asphalt patching.
City officials said designated detour routes will be available for drivers, though specific alternate routes were not detailed in the announcement.
Weather conditions could affect the construction timeline, with the city noting work is scheduled "weather permitting" for both days.
Fort Collins Street Maintenance Funding
The asphalt repair project falls under the city's Essential Street Operations program, which is funded through Fort Collins' transportation and mobility services budget. The city's 2025-2026 adopted budget allocated $98.7 million total for transportation services in 2025, including $26.8 million from the General Fund, according to city budget documents.
Those transportation funds cover ongoing services including street and bridge maintenance, road construction and capital projects, traffic operations, and snow and ice removal.
The city's 2026 transportation budget drops to $65.1 million total, with $27.8 million from the General Fund, reflecting the completion of certain capital projects.
Recent Road Work in Fort Collins
The Taft Hill and Harmony intersection repair follows a September 25 emergency closure of South Shields Street caused by a gas leak during Xcel Energy's natural gas line replacement project between Drake Road and Horsetooth Road. That closure significantly impacted traffic flow on one of Fort Collins' major north-south arterials, which typically handles more than 18,000 vehicles per day.
The city also has approved funding for a Taft Hill Road and Active Modes Improvements project that would add multi-modal improvements including widened sidewalks, a new side path, protected bike lanes and safer crossings. That project received a funding recommendation of $539,864 and focuses on improving safety and connectivity between multiple schools and lower-income housing developments, according to meeting documents from the Northern Area Air Quality Management Entity Board of Directors.
