Larimer County Sheriff's Office Teams with Big Bones Canine Rescue for Second Annual Dogs & Deputies Event
The Larimer County Sheriff's Office will host its second annual Dogs & Deputies community event October 11 at The Manor in Wellington, partnering with Big Bones Canine Rescue to showcase adoptable dogs and connect families with potential four-legged companions.
The family-friendly event begins in the afternoon and features dozens of adoptable dogs from Big Bones Canine Rescue alongside pet-related vendors and educational opportunities. Attendees can interact with available dogs regardless of whether they plan to adopt, according to the sheriff's office.
"Whether or not you're planning to add a furry friend to your household, come get some pup snuggles and enjoy a beautiful Fall afternoon with us," the sheriff's office announced October 3.
The event takes place at The Manor, a community venue in Wellington capable of hosting up to 300 guests with accessibility features and ample parking for large community gatherings.
Partnership Addresses Regional Adoption Needs
The collaboration between the sheriff's office and Big Bones Canine Rescue addresses ongoing animal welfare needs across Larimer and Weld Counties, where NOCO Humane reports serving more than 10,000 animals annually with hundreds of dogs typically needing homes at any given time.
Big Bones Canine Rescue, a nonprofit organization based in Windsor, focuses on rescuing and rehabilitating dogs, particularly large breeds that face challenges in traditional adoption settings. The 501(c)(3) organization specializes in dogs at risk of euthanasia or those requiring rehabilitation before placement in permanent homes.
Northern Colorado animal shelters have faced capacity challenges in recent years, with shelter occupancy rates nearing or exceeding physical capacity during peak surrender periods. Local shelters maintain waitlists for foster homes and encourage community involvement to address ongoing placement needs.
Community Event Format Encourages Family Participation
The Dogs & Deputies format allows families to interact with adoptable animals in a relaxed community setting while learning about responsible pet ownership and local animal welfare resources. Pet-related vendors will provide information about services and products available throughout Northern Colorado.
The sheriff's office emphasized the event's accessibility to all families, including those not currently seeking to adopt pets. The community interaction model helps socialize rescue dogs while educating residents about animal care and local rescue operations.
Similar adoption events throughout Colorado typically result in multiple same-day adoptions, with additional applications submitted for animals requiring standard screening processes that include reference checks and home safety evaluations.
For residents interested in dog adoption, the typical process involves application submission, screening interviews with adoption coordinators, reference verification, and matchmaking between animal personalities and adopter lifestyles. Adoption fees typically range from $50 to $200, depending on the dog's age, breed, and medical status.
The October 11 event provides an opportunity for Larimer and Weld County residents to support local animal welfare efforts while enjoying community interaction during favorable fall weather conditions in Wellington.
