Lemay and Prospect Intersection to Close Sunday for Traffic Signal Repairs
The busy intersection of Lemay Avenue and Prospect Road will operate as a flagger-controlled four-way stop this Sunday while city crews complete repairs from a crash earlier this year.
Traffic signals will be deactivated from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 7 as workers install a new traffic cabinet that controls the intersection's signals. The work is the final step in repairing damage from a vehicle collision that severely impacted the traffic signal system.
The intersection handles between 30,000 to 40,000 vehicles per day, making it one of Fort Collins' busiest arterial crossings, according to the city's Transportation Master Plan. City officials are warning drivers to expect significant delays and recommend avoiding the area entirely during the work period.
"All traffic must come to a stop at the intersection during the work. A flagger will be directing traffic through the intersection," the city stated in its announcement.
The damaged signal has already been rebuilt, but Sunday's work will complete the full restoration by installing the replacement traffic cabinet. These specialized cabinets, which house the electronic controls for traffic signals, typically cost between $20,000 to $60,000 per intersection for major municipalities, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
City crews may finish the installation before the scheduled 6 p.m. completion time, potentially reopening normal traffic flow earlier than planned.
Jesus Villalobos, Senior Inspector for the city's Compliance department, is overseeing the project and can be reached at 970-889-0269 for questions about the work.
The repair follows standard city protocols for crash-damaged infrastructure. When vehicles damage traffic signals, Fort Collins immediately deploys temporary traffic control measures while ordering replacement equipment and scheduling permanent repairs.
