Weld County to put $1.3 million toward signal at Highway 52 and WCR 37

The intersection carries 14,400 vehicles a day, and county officials say a signal is needed to reduce crash risk. Public Works cites federal data suggesting it could cut fatal and serious crashes by about 50%; no construction start date is set.

Weld County plans to contribute $1.3 million toward the Colorado Department of Transportation's construction and installation of a traffic signal at Colorado Highway 52 and Weld County Road 37, between Fort Lupton and Hudson.

The intersection now carries 14,400 vehicles daily, up from more than 12,000 daily in 2020. Weld County says that volume makes a signal necessary to reduce the likelihood of crashes.

Weld County Public Works, citing Federal Highway Administration data, believes a signal can reduce fatal and serious crashes at the intersection by about 50%. A construction start date has not yet been set.

The Colorado Department of Transportation's 2022 project at the intersection added left-turn lanes on all approaches. It also added a right-turn lane connecting eastbound Colorado Highway 52 traffic to southbound WCR 37.

"It's always our goal to increase safety and efficiency on our roads. We’re happy to partner with CDOT to achieve that goal," said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair.
