The play follows Elwood P. Dowd, whose closest companion is Harvey, a 6-foot-tall invisible rabbit known as a pooka, a Celtic spirit that takes the form of a giant rabbit. Elwood treats Harvey as an ordinary friend, while the people around him are less convinced that Harvey is real.
Benjamin Kessler, Aims Theater Director and Instructor, said the story holds more than its premise suggests. "Underneath that wonderfully ridiculous premise is a story about kindness, individuality, acceptance and the sometimes arbitrary expectations society places on us," he said.
Aims Community Theater selected United Way of Weld County as its nonprofit community partner for the production.
"Harvey" was written by Colorado native Mary Chase in 1944. Aims Community Theater said the play continues to resonate with audiences more than 80 years after its debut.
