Sprinklers contain fire in Fort Collins commercial building on Frontage Road
No injuries have been reported. Crews removed burned materials and ventilated the area; investigators are working to determine the cause. The fire authority says sprinklers are intended to contain fires, not necessarily extinguish them.
Poudre Fire Authority crews extinguished a fire Nov. 1 in a commercial building in the 800 block of Frontage Rd. on the northeast side of Fort Collins, and no injuries have been reported.
Firefighters were dispatched to an automatic alarm at about 10:30 a.m. They arrived and performed a 360, and the engine crew saw a small amount of smoke at the back of the building. More resources were called for a confirmed structure fire response.
Firefighters entered the building and found a room filled with heavy smoke but relatively low heat. They located flames and made the initial attack with an inch and three quarters hose line. The fire sprinklers had activated.
"The sprinklers did their job; they kept the fire in check," said the Engine 6 captain. Sprinklers, especially in areas with a high amount of combustibles such as a warehouse, are intended to keep a fire contained and not necessarily extinguish it entirely, Poudre Fire Authority said.
Crews removed burned materials and ventilated the area to ensure the fire was completely out. Fire authority investigators are on scene, and the cause is under investigation.
