Colorado State beats San Diego State 56-49 as Durell Robinson puts Rams ahead for good

The Aztecs went ahead in the first quarter and retook the lead in the second. An interception return extended the Rams’ halftime lead before Lucky Sutton’s late touchdown brought San Diego State back within a touchdown.

Colorado State beat San Diego State 56-49 on Saturday at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, taking the lead for good in the second quarter before holding off the Aztecs after a late touchdown. Hauss Hejny opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Tommy Maher. San Diego State answered with two touchdown runs and led 14-7 with 3:19 left in the first quarter. Durell Robinson’s touchdown run tied it at 14-14 before the quarter ended.

In the second quarter, a field goal put San Diego State back ahead before Hejny’s touchdown pass to Maher gave the Rams a 21-17 lead. A touchdown run put the Aztecs in front 24-21, but Robinson’s touchdown run gave Colorado State the lead for good, 28-24, with 5:14 left in the second quarter. Robinson finished with 86 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. The Rams then returned a Stone Saunders interception for a touchdown and led 35-24 at halftime.

After a San Diego State field goal to start the third quarter, Hejny found Robinson for a touchdown and a 42-27 Rams lead. Hejny completed 24 of 31 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns. Saunders answered with a touchdown pass to Jaylon Hawkins, cutting the lead to 42-34 after three quarters. Hejny’s touchdown run opened the fourth-quarter scoring, but Saunders threw a touchdown pass and completed a two-point conversion pass to make it 49-42.

Hejny ran for another touchdown to give Colorado State a 56-42 lead. San Diego State followed with a drive that ended in Lucky Sutton’s touchdown run with 1:57 left in the fourth quarter, cutting it to 56-49. Sutton had 22 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns. The Rams held off the Aztecs, who did not score again.
