I-25 traffic moves into new alignment on Mead-to-Berthoud stretch

The project is scheduled for completion in 2028, with one Express Lane in each direction between Colorado Highway 66 and south of Colorado Highway 56, plus wider shoulders and rebuilt bridges.

The final traffic switch is complete on the I-25 North Express Lanes segment between Mead and Berthoud, moving traffic into a new alignment.

Crews have worked on the approximately six-mile project since May 2024. The work will expand and enhance I-25 from Colorado Highway 66 in Mead to the newly built portion of I-25 just south of Colorado Highway 56 in Berthoud. “This traffic switch signifies so much more than just getting out of a head-to-head condition and getting vehicles onto their respective lanes. This milestone demonstrates the continuous progress and work the north corridor of I-25 has sustained for over a quarter century,” said CDOT Region 4 Transportation Director Heather Paddock.

The project is to be complete in 2028.

Projected improvements include widening the inside roadway shoulder to 10 feet and the outside shoulder to 12 feet. Plans call for one 12-foot Express Lane in each direction between Colorado Highway 66 and south of Colorado Highway 56. A four-foot painted buffer is to separate the Express Lanes from the general-purpose lanes. The project is also to install and integrate tolling and Intelligent Transportation Systems equipment.

Plans call for fully reconstructing the I-25 and Weld County Road 34 interchange. The project is also to fully reconstruct bridges at Weld County Road 32, Weld County Road 34, I-25 over Great Western Railway, Weld County Road 38 and I-25 over Valley Road.

The project will mark the first time I-25 has more than two lanes in both directions from Denver to Fort Collins, CDOT says. The Mead-to-Berthoud section continues approximately 20 miles of improvements completed on I-25 between Berthoud and Fort Collins over the past six years.
