Greeley Central senior grows into softball team leader, coach says
She is the team’s only senior this season, a position that gives her a chance to set an example for younger players, her coach says. She advises them to have fun and keep going through setbacks.
Tasia Alvarez has grown into a leader for Greeley Central's softball team, coach Eden Hartman says.
Alvarez is the softball team's only senior this season and is in a unique position to lead and set an example for younger teammates, Hartman says. She has known Alvarez as a teacher and coach since Alvarez's sophomore year and has found watching her grow over the past few years rewarding.
The profile identifies Alvarez as a senior at Greeley Central High School who plays pitcher, first base and third base. Her statistics include a .311 batting average, 20 RBIs and an .867 OPS. The profile also lists 37 hits, a .845 fielding percentage and 70 strikeouts.
Alvarez says her worst sports performance came at Timnath during her junior year, the day after what she described as an amazing game against Severance. She struggled to pitch strikes and could not get a base hit in the season's last game. She says she used that experience as fuel to improve and help girls who felt as she had. Her advice to younger players is to smile, have fun and keep going through setbacks: “Every missed ball, every strikeout, and every walk only opens the door for a home run, an amazing play, and a strikeout,” Alvarez says.
