Northern Colorado beats Cal Poly 28-18 as Trey Olsen scores twice
The Bears trailed after the first quarter, went ahead on Justin Guin’s 35-yard run and led by three after a Cal Poly touchdown and conversion. Olsen’s fourth-quarter run set the final margin.
Northern Colorado took the lead for good in the second quarter and beat Cal Poly 28-18 on Saturday at Nottingham Field in Greeley. The Mustangs cut the margin to three in the third quarter before Trey Olsen’s second touchdown set the final score.
Cal Poly went ahead on Jaden Green’s 1-yard run with 6:25 left in the first quarter. Northern Colorado tied it early in the second on Brandon Lambert Jr.’s 1-yard run, then moved in front when Justin Guin scored on a 35-yard run with 3:30 left in the half. Guin finished with 128 yards on 12 carries and 1 touchdown. Josue Lopez’s 23-yard field goal left the Bears ahead 14-10 at halftime.
From there, Keegan Patterson found Olsen for a 30-yard touchdown pass, extending Northern Colorado’s lead to 21-10. Olsen caught 4 passes for 121 yards and 1 touchdown. Cal Poly answered with a drive that ended in Tayvion McCoy’s 10-yard run. Anthony Grigsby Jr., who completed 27 of 34 passes for 300 yards and 1 interception, passed to Alek Marshall for the two-point conversion, bringing the Mustangs to 21-18.
An interception ended Northern Colorado’s next drive, and a fumble ended Cal Poly’s following possession. The Bears then drove again, and Olsen’s 15-yard run with 8:38 left in the fourth quarter made it 28-18. Neither team scored again.
