Weld County limits cistern permits for accessory dwelling units

From the Weld County Board of County Commissioners meeting of

The requirement applies only when the primary residence already has a cistern. Higher permitting costs do not establish that water is unavailable, and cisterns may supply drinking water.

Weld County commissioners approved an ordinance Oct. 12 limiting cistern permits for accessory dwelling units to properties where the existing primary residence already has a cistern.

Under the ordinance, a cistern may supply drinking water to a residence. A cistern permit for an accessory dwelling unit requires an existing cistern at the primary residence. Additional cost to permit applicants does not count as proof of lack of availability.

The changes followed the ordinance’s first reading Sept. 28 and a work session with the board Sept. 29. “I believe those are the changes the board requested at the work session,” the ordinance’s presenter said.
