Evans speed cameras may issue warnings for first 35 days
After the warning period, qualifying speeding violations may bring citations and fines. The system includes a fixed camera at 37th Street and Palermo Avenue, with mobile cameras eligible for deployment on four corridors.
The City of Evans will begin deploying speed cameras after the 30-day advance notice period, and drivers may receive warnings during the first 35 days of operation before citations and fines begin.
For the first 35 days of camera operation, drivers detected exceeding posted speed limits may receive warning notices rather than citations and corresponding fines. After the warning period, the city will begin issuing citations with fines for qualifying speeding violations.
A notice dated Oct. 9 gives 30 days’ advance notice of locations designated for the city’s Automated Vehicle Identification System (AVIS) speed enforcement program. The city will begin deploying cameras at those locations after the required notice period. The program will include one fixed camera at 37th Street and Palermo Avenue, plus four corridors where mobile speed cameras may be deployed. The corridors are 37th Street from 65th Avenue to Highway 85; 42nd Street/Prairie View Drive from 35th Avenue to Highway 85; 35th Avenue from the north city limits to 49th Street; and 11th Avenue from Highway 34 to 37th Street.
The AVIS program is designed to reduce speeding, improve roadway safety and encourage compliance with posted speed limits, the city said. The initial 35-day period is intended to increase awareness and encourage drivers to adjust their speeds before monetary penalties begin. The program is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve traffic safety for motorists, pedestrians and residents throughout Evans.
