PSD recommends closing Timnath Elementary in 2027-28, mayor says

The school board has not approved the proposal. The town council plans to consider a resolution in support Oct. 13, ahead of a scheduled board vote Oct. 27; families can also weigh in through district channels and listening sessions.

Poudre School District has recommended closing Timnath Elementary starting with the 2027-28 school year, but its Board of Education has not approved the proposal, Timnath Mayor Robert Axmacher said.

Axmacher said the Town Council is concerned about the proposed closure’s effects on students and families, including transportation and student well-being. “Additional travel time and distance for young students raise questions about safety, daily routines, and the amount of time children spend away from home and their home community,” he wrote.

Axmacher said PSD leadership confirmed that, under the current recommendation, students displaced to Bamford or Linton Elementary would later continue their education at Timnath Middle-High School. Axmacher’s letter lists a formal presentation to the Board of Education on Oct. 13. It says the board is scheduled to vote on Oct. 27.

Axmacher said the Town Council will take up a formal resolution in support of Timnath Elementary at its next meeting, Oct. 13. His letter says community members can give feedback through the PSD online survey, by email at info@psdschools.org, and at upcoming listening sessions and Board of Education meetings. A Timnath Elementary family meeting is listed for Oct. 2, 5-6:30 p.m., at Timnath Elementary School, 3909 Main Street, Timnath. A community listening session is listed for Oct. 12, 6-7:30 p.m., at the Timnath Middle-High School Auditorium, 4700 E. Prospect Road, Timnath.

Axmacher said the town recognizes the district’s enrollment challenges and that the Timnath Elementary building requires significant updates. He said Timnath continues to welcome new families, neighborhoods and investment, and will continue to grow and evolve. Axmacher said the Board of Education should consider the educational needs of future generations and Timnath’s growing community as it considers the recommendation.
