Namaqua Elementary replaces about 10,000 square feet of grass with low-water landscaping
The new space includes designated walking paths and drop-off zones, an ADA-accessible picnic area and native plants. Grants and school and district funds paid for the work, the district said.
The Thompson School District said it replaced about 10,000 square feet of Kentucky bluegrass in front of Namaqua Elementary School with low-water landscaping intended to conserve water.
The new area on the west side of the school’s entrance has designated walking paths and drop-off zones, an ADA-accessible picnic area and native plants for students and the community.
Grants from Northern Water and the Colorado Water Conservation Board, along with school and district funds, funded the project, according to the district. The district says the space will continue to grow and provide year-round color and biodiversity for pollinators.
