Adults 60 and older can join movement classes, wellness walks, balance screenings and talks on home safety, vision and nutrition. Reservations are required for some lunches; call the agency at (970) 400-6117 for details.

Weld County’s Area Agency on Aging will offer free fall-prevention events for adults 60 and older from Monday, Sept. 21, through Friday, Sept. 25, at locations across the county, the county said. Activities include movement classes, wellness walks, balance screenings and presentations on home safety, vision and nutrition.

“Our goal is to give people practical steps they can use every day,” said Gabi Snyder, the agency’s wellness program coordinator. “We want adults 60 and older to know support is available through these free programs.”

The schedule begins Sept. 21 with Tai Chi at Sanborn Park in Greeley, a low-vision presentation at the Greeley Active Adult Center and a wellness walk at the Kersey Community Center. Other events include a home-modifications presentation Sept. 22 at the Johnstown Senior Center, a balance exercise class Sept. 23 at the Greeley center and Tai Chi Sept. 24 at Lola Park in Milliken.

The week concludes Sept. 25 with balance screenings at the Platteville Senior Center from 10 to 11 a.m., followed by lunch. The county’s release directs attendees to reserve lunch for the Greeley presentation, the Firestone nutrition presentation and the Platteville screenings. Reservations are available at (970) 350-9440 for the Greeley event, (303) 833-3660 ext. 123 for the Firestone event and (720) 815-8136 for the Platteville event. Weld Aging Well’s general information number is (970) 400-6117.

The county said falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and older, citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 14 million older adults, or about one in four, report falling each year, according to the county’s release.
