Greeley will require contractor licenses for permits starting in 2027

The City of Greeley Building Inspection Department will require contractors to hold a City of Greeley contractor license before applying for permits beginning Jan. 1, 2027, according to a city news release.

The city said the new rule applies to all applicable trades, including general contractors and specialty trade contractors. Contractors must also have a valid city license before starting construction work, making alterations or repairs, or performing demolition regulated by the Building Inspection Department.

According to the city, contractors may need to show proof of licensing during a project. Contractors without a valid city license may have their permit denied or be ordered to stop work.

Dusty Shepherd, deputy building official with the City of Greeley, said, “Contractor Licensing doesn’t limit opportunity, it protects it.”

The city said the change is intended to protect public safety, support consistent construction standards and ensure work meets building codes across Greeley. For more information, the city directed residents to the Building Inspection Department by phone or email.
