Fort Collins to sell low-cost trees to residents in August

The City of Fort Collins will offer 1,000 locally grown trees to residents for $25 each through its annual Rooted in Community Tree Sale, according to a city news release.

Sales open at 8 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, and are limited to residents within the Fort Collins Growth Management Area. Households may buy up to two trees, and purchases will be made online through WebTrac on a first-come, first-served basis until all trees are reserved.

The tree selection includes species such as Ohio buckeye 'Jimmy K.', fruitless crabapple, Haralson apple and several varieties of oaks and elms, along with other shade, ornamental and fruit trees grown locally by Fort Collins Wholesale Nursery.

Pickup is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hoffman Mill, according to the city. Trees must be picked up that day, though residents may send someone else to collect them. Any trees not picked up on Sept. 12 will be donated.

The city said the sale, formerly called the Community Canopy Program, is supported by the Natural Areas Nature in the City program and the Forestry Division. Christine Holtz, senior forestry specialist, said the program helps residents build a healthier, resilient urban forest in Fort Collins.
