Moody’s affirms Fort Collins’ top credit rating

Moody’s Ratings has reaffirmed Fort Collins’ Aaa issuer credit rating, the highest rating a municipality can receive, according to the city.

City officials said the rating reflects the city’s diverse economic base, including Colorado State University and its technology sector, along with strong financial management, formal reserve policies and a willingness to adjust spending to maintain structural balance.

Chief Financial Officer Caleb Weitz said the rating shows investors that the city “stewards our debt responsibilities seriously.” He said the high rating helps the city access favorable financing and lower borrowing costs for public improvements.

The city said the rating comes ahead of issuance of a Certificate of Participation for the Southeast Community Center. Moody’s rated that obligation Aa2, based on the city’s overall Aaa issuer rating.
