Weld County Launches $149 Million Road Projects With Online Updates
Weld County is investing more than $149 million to upgrade two key county roads and is launching project-specific email newsletters and websites so residents can track construction progress years ahead of completion.
Work begins this fall on a four-mile section of WCR 66, from U.S. Highway 85 to WCR 47 north of the Greeley-Weld County Airport. The $87.7 million project will upgrade the road to four lanes with 10-foot shoulders.
WCR 54, from WCR 13 to Highway 257, will be upgraded to a two-lane concrete road with 8-foot shoulders starting in 2027, at a cost of $62 million. Safety work already underway on the corridor includes a four-way stop at WCR 54 and WCR 13, plus a roundabout at the same intersection starting later this year.
Curtis Hall, Weld County Public Works Director, said the WCR 66 improvements are critical for the corridor's future. "This road, which has seen heavy use by the agricultural industry, will only see continued use, particularly after the completion of the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvements," Hall said. "This work will ensure the road can continue to be safe and efficient for years to come."
Weld County Public Works will manage both projects, with design firm Benesch overseeing design and construction. A contractor will be selected soon.
Residents can track progress via WCR 66 Updates at www.weld.gov/Go/WCR66 and WCR 54 Updates at www.weld.gov/Go/WCR54.
Scott James, Weld County Commissioner Chair, said the newsletters and websites offer transparency into how tax dollars are being spent. "Similar to other newsletters on road projects and roundabouts, people can expect regular updates on progress and pictures that help them stay informed of these transportation projects," James said. "These updates offer a glimpse of your tax dollars at work, so we encourage everyone to sign up."
