Greeley and Weld County residents can drop off real Christmas trees for free at the Greeley Organic Waste (GROW) Center through Jan. 31, 2026. Bring trees to 1150 25th Avenue, where staff grind them into compost.

The program also introduces the GROW Center's new permanent location, which opened Dec. 3, 2024. "The new site is bigger and easier to access for residents," according to the City of Greeley.

Trees must be free of all lights and decorations. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting. The center closes Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

The move addresses a growing environmental problem. "Organic/green waste makes up the most waste in landfills; recycling these materials reduces landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions," according to the City of Greeley. Organics in landfills produce methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times more potent than carbon dioxide, according to GROW Center materials.

The program supports Colorado's Front Range goal of diverting at least 39 percent of waste from landfills by 2026 and 51 percent by 2036.

Beyond the holiday promotion, the center accepts trees, brush, leaves, grass clippings, and clean wood year-round for $10 per cubic yard (cash only).

Residents with questions about Christmas tree recycling or other recycling options in Greeley can call 970-673-3718 or visit https://greeleyco.gov/residents/resources/recycling.

The GROW Center, created in 2006, is operated by DBB Land and Compost, LLC under contract with the City.
