Participants in the Timnath Citizen Academy gained hands-on experience with firefighting equipment and emergency response procedures during a session at the Poudre Fire Authority Training Center.

The evening featured four interactive stations where residents learned emergency medical services basics, operated fire hoses, walked through a smoke house simulator, and tried on firefighter protective gear.

The training session represents one class in Timnath's seven-week program that gives residents behind-the-scenes access to town operations, including public works, law enforcement, parks and community development.

Program Connects Residents to Local Government

Timnath launched its Citizen Academy in fall 2023 to strengthen civic engagement and help residents understand how their town government functions, according to the Poudre Fire Authority.

The annual program runs for seven consecutive weeks each fall, with sessions lasting two to three hours. Participants rotate through presentations and demonstrations from all town departments.

The fire service component allows residents to experience controlled emergency scenarios and understand the physical demands firefighters face during responses.

"It was a fun-filled night of learning, teamwork, and community connection," according to PFA.

PFA Serves Timnath Through Regional Partnership

Poudre Fire Authority provides fire and emergency services to Timnath as part of its 230-square-mile service area covering Fort Collins, LaPorte, Bellvue and portions of Larimer and Weld counties.

The authority was established in 1981 through an intergovernmental agreement between Fort Collins and the Poudre Valley Fire Protection District, according to PFA organizational documents. Timnath's fire protection falls under PVFPD coverage within the consolidated PFA structure.

The authority operates 13 fire stations and serves approximately 212,000 residents across Northern Colorado. PFA received accredited status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International in 2015.

Fire Service Education Programs Build Community Preparedness

Fire departments across Colorado have integrated public education programs as core components of risk reduction and emergency preparedness strategies.

Community engagement initiatives including citizen fire academies consistently improve resident confidence in responding to emergencies and increase participation in disaster preparedness activities, according to fire service evaluation reports.

Post-program surveys from fire departments across Northern Colorado show 80 to 95 percent of participants report feeling better prepared for local emergencies after completing hands-on training programs.

Similar citizen academy programs operate in Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley, with most running eight to ten weeks and featuring emergency services demonstrations. Fort Collins offers CityWorks 101, while Loveland and Greeley operate citizen academies with comparable multi-department formats.

The Timnath program's seven-week structure makes it slightly shorter than neighboring municipal offerings while maintaining the comprehensive overview of town operations that larger jurisdictions provide.

The PFA Training Center hosts multiple community education events annually as part of the authority's public outreach mission.
