The City of Loveland is accepting applications from community members interested in serving on city advisory boards and commissions through a recruitment effort that runs from October 13 through November 13.

The annual fall recruitment seeks to fill vacancies across 14 boards and commissions that advise city staff and Loveland City Council on projects and policies ranging from historic preservation to utility management to public art. No prior board experience is required to apply.

Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on November 13, or until all positions are filled.

Planning Commission Requires Significant Time Investment

The boards vary considerably in their time demands. The Planning Commission, which reviews development proposals and zoning amendments, typically meets twice monthly and requires an estimated 36 to 60 hours annually including preparation time for public hearings.

Most other boards meet monthly with annual time commitments ranging from 15 to 36 hours. The Citizen's Finance Advisory Commission meets more frequently during budget season, while the Historic Preservation Commission occasionally requires additional site visits or hearings beyond regular monthly meetings.

All board and commission positions are volunteer roles with no salary or stipend provided by the city, according to Loveland Municipal Code and City Council meeting records.

Appointments Made by City Council

The appointment process begins with application review by city staff and respective boards based on eligibility and qualifications. Recommendations are then forwarded to Loveland City Council, which makes final appointment decisions through resolutions at regular council meetings.

Most boards operate with three-year terms, though some positions may have two-year terms for youth or alternate members as specified in individual board bylaws. Term limits typically allow members to serve two consecutive terms.

General Eligibility Requirements Apply

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and residents of Loveland, though some boards allow non-resident members who own property or operate businesses within city limits. Youth positions on certain boards are available for residents aged 15 to 18.

All members must comply with city ethics requirements, including disclosure of any conflicts of interest related to board responsibilities. Individuals with felony convictions or disqualifying criminal records are ineligible under city ethics policy.

Some boards seek members with specific expertise or backgrounds. The Citizen's Finance Advisory Commission prefers applicants with financial or budgeting experience, while the Historic Preservation Commission looks for knowledge of preservation practices. The Visual Arts Commission seeks members with backgrounds in art, and the Loveland Utilities Commission values technical or utilities experience.

Boards Address Diverse City Functions

Current vacancies span boards covering financial oversight, cultural programs, accessibility, golf course operations, historic preservation, city communications, utilities, open space and trails, parks and recreation, land use planning, police-community relations, senior services, transportation, and visual arts.

The Disabilities Advisory Commission advises City Council on accessibility and ADA compliance issues. The Open Lands and Trails Advisory Commission guides planning for open space and trail system management. The Transportation Advisory Board provides recommendations on transportation planning, transit operations, and traffic management.

Recent regional housing initiatives have increased focus on planning and land use decisions, making the Planning Commission's work particularly relevant to community development discussions affecting Loveland and surrounding Larimer County areas.
