Windsor Lake closed after harmful algae test
The Town of Windsor has closed access to Windsor Lake until further notice after a test confirmed the presence of harmful algae blooms, officials said.
The closure affects town-provided recreational activities, including swimming and boat rentals, according to the town’s closure page. Recreational activities such as tubing and water skiing will not be available while the lake remains closed.
Non-motorized boaters may still use their permits at their own risk, and the town said visitors should avoid skin contact with the water. Fishing is still permitted, provided fish are cleaned well and guts are discarded. The town also said water samples will continue to be sent to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment until a negative test is confirmed.
Kendra Martin, Windsor’s operations manager, said staff visually observed blooms and tested the lake after regular monitoring. Eric Lucas, the deputy town manager, said the town was following its protocols by closing the lake after a positive test and said the lake would reopen when it is safe.
The town said it will continue to monitor water quality through the summer. It also said Windsor Lake remains open for other uses, including the Dr. Tom Jones Trail, the volleyball court, the playground, Boardwalk Park Museum and the park area.
