Wellington unveils sign honoring state champion Eagles teams
State champion athletes from Wellington Middle/High School now have a public marker recognizing the school’s title-winning teams after the town and school unveiled a new road sign near campus June 9.
The sign was installed on the west side of N County Road 9, just north of its intersection with County Road 62E, according to the town’s news release and official video. It was created through a partnership between Wellington Middle/High School and the Town of Wellington.
The sign has a maroon background with white lettering that reads “WELCOME TO WELLINGTON” and “Home of the Eagles.” Under a banner reading “STATE CHAMPIONS,” it lists the school’s state champion football teams from 1952, 1953 and 2025, along with state champion basketball teams from 1953 and 1957.
Those attending the ceremony included Mayor Rebekka Dailey, Principal Troy Krotz, Athletic Director Hilarie Bartling, head football coach Travis Peeples, assistant football coach Steve Sarno, Poudre School District Board member Dr. Andrew Spain, town staff and members of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.
Dailey said the sign reflects civic pride and the role sports can play in bringing a community together. Peeples said the school is “on the right track” and said he was glad to be the first team on the sign in the new era.
Wellington High School opened in 1926, closed in 1964 and reopened in 2022 as Wellington Middle/High School, which now serves students in grades 6 through 12.
