Estes Park postpones July 4 fireworks show because of wildfire risk

Estes Park is postponing its annual Independence Day fireworks show over Lake Estes because of rising wildfire risk, the town said in a news release Monday. A new date will be announced once conditions improve.

The decision was made with the Estes Valley Fire Protection District after officials said wildland fire risk changed significantly over the weekend and the weather forecast for the rest of the week was unfavorable. The town also said firefighting resources are declining across the region as crews and equipment are sent elsewhere in the state to respond to active wildfires.

Stage 2 fire restrictions are currently in effect, according to the town’s release. Under those restrictions, charcoal and wood grills, campfires and other open flames are prohibited, smoking is banned except inside an enclosed vehicle or building, and vehicles should not be parked or idled over dry grass or vegetation.

The town also reminded residents that private fireworks are illegal in Estes Park and the surrounding area at all times. The release urged anyone who spots a spark, smoke or an unattended fire to call 911 immediately.
