Loveland library highlights free book programs for young readers

The Loveland Public Library is highlighting several programs that put free books directly into the hands of children and teens as part of an effort to help families build home libraries.

In a June 1 news release, the city said research from around the world suggests that children who grow up with access to books develop stronger literacy, numeracy and technology skills that benefit them into adulthood. The library said its book-giveaway programs are supported by the Friends of the Loveland Public Library.

Among the programs is the Read 365 Challenge, which lets children from birth to age 11 earn prize books to keep as they reach reading milestones during the school year. Registration forms are available at the Children’s Desk. The library also said first-grade students visit through a partnership with Thompson School District, receive a library card and take home a free book.

The Summer Learning Program 2026 runs May 22 through July 31 and gives youth ages 0 to 17 a free book when they register and another after completing 40 days of reading. The city said a coming program, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, will give families with young children another way to earn free books and build early literacy skills together.
