Loveland settles 2019 police dog shooting incident for $675000
The City of Loveland said Wednesday that it reached a $675,000 settlement related to a June 2019 incident in which a Loveland police officer shot an unleashed dog.
According to the city’s news release, the incident began after a business owner called 911 to report two people trespassing on private property. An officer responded and encountered two unleashed dogs. One dog returned to its owners when called, but the second dog did not respond to commands, charged the officer and was shot.
The settlement also includes updates to the Loveland Police Department’s dog encounter policy and training practices. The city said the agreement resolves the matter instead of going to court, and the individuals involved agreed not to pursue further legal action against the city and related entities.
The city said it and the police department remain committed to reviewing policies, training and practices related to public safety, transparency and community trust.
