Greeley marks Historic Preservation Month with free May events

The City of Greeley is celebrating Historic Preservation Month in May with free events, including a history presentation, a public proclamation and an awards ceremony recognizing local preservation projects.

The city’s Historic Preservation Office said the events are meant to highlight people and projects that help preserve Greeley’s history. Betsy Kellums, a historic preservation office planner, said, “Celebrating historic preservation reminds the community that protecting historic places also means preserving the stories and identity that connect generations.”

Mayor Hall is scheduled to announce May as Historic Preservation Month at the May 19 City Council meeting. The city said community members are encouraged to attend the meeting or watch it online.

The Historic Preservation Celebration and Awards Ceremony is set for Thursday, May 21, at 5 p.m. at the Greeley Creative Arts Center, 702 13th St. The city said attendees will be able to see award winners, hear from preservation leaders and watch short films about Greeley’s historic places.

Other events include History Hour at the Greeley History Museum with museum manager Dr. Chris Bowles, who will discuss daily life in 1876 and introduce the exhibit Home News: A Greeley View of the Centennial. The city also said Historic Preservation Month videos will air on GTV8 throughout May and will be available online. All of the events are free and open to the public.
